June 15, 2011

The Vietnamese public has submitted their votes for which flower should be named the country's national flower.

The voting, which took place from June 9 through June 12 at locations in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang, revealed that the pink lotus is the public's most coveted bloom.

According to, more than 50,000 ballots were entered.

The pink lotus received 70 percent of the votes. Other popular blooms include the apricot blossom and peach blossom.

The results of the vote, which was organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, will be submitted to the government for an official declaration.

Vietnam will not be the first country to name the lotus flower as its national bloom. India, Egypt and Sri Lanka also recognize the lotus as a national symbol.

Lotus flowers are often believed to symbolize simplicity, hospitality and purity.

While the lotus flower is not commonly used in cut flower arrangements, those looking to send a bouquet that conveys these emotions may consider tropical flowers as well as many other types of blooms.
