Stock upon zinnias for 2011

December 29, 2010

Professional horticulturalists have selected the zinnia to represent 2011 as part of an annual tradition of showcasing a flower in anticipation of the coming New Year. With just a few days left in 2010, flower lovers should start stocking up on this timely bloom.

"It’s hard to believe that before extensive plant breeding, these flowers carried the nickname "sickness of the eye!" – native zinnias in Mexico just weren’t that attractive," though they now come in an extensive variety of attractive colors, says Leo Lubke of Metrowny.com.

According to the news source, the zinnia will replace the 2010 marigold in the annual flower category. The horticulturalists usually select blooms that are underrepresented yet easy for just about anyone to grow, which are then promoted throughout the country.

Zinnias are traditionally associated with "thoughts of absent friends, lasting affection, constancy, goodness and daily remembrance," according to LivingArtsOriginals.com, making them an ideal addition to a New Year's Eve flower centerpiece or bouquet sent to faraway friends. Even if you can't bring everyone together, the blooms will carry your sentiments for you and set the mood for the positive year ahead.
