Portland hosts fantasy-themed flower show
by

March 10, 2011
There seems to be a lot of emphasis on fantastical
contemporary floral arrangements
this month. One of the biggest examples of this trend is found at the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, where cartoon characters will be made out of flowers, according to MagicalKingdoms.com.
But there are other shows that are following a similar theme - in Portland, Maine, the Enchanted Earth contest has been an effort to transport attendees to another world. The winning design, Once Upon a Time, features beanstalks climbing a pole, trolls made from moss and a plant that is supposed to represent a spider web. A line of lilacs creates a path running through the display.
Lilacs were present in the exhibits in full force and many spectators voiced their admiration for the designers.
"We come every year," Carla Dupuis told the news provider. "And this is the best one yet." She and her husband agreed that the show was a much-needed relief from the long, dreary winter.
One of the more spectacular
plants
was the Japanese willow, which is 25 feet tall. It was surrounded by fragrant lilacs and towered over a small pond.
The Portland Flower Show will be open until Sunday, March 13.
