How to keep plants healthy

The summer season brings plenty of joy to many people as they are finally able to go to the beach and heat up the grill. It is also a time when tropical flowers, orchids and hydrangeas bloom. Some people, however, need a little extra help when it comes to keeping their plants healthy in the summer heat.

According to Fair Lawn Patch, watering is extremely important, but so is picking out the right plants. Petunias and portulaca are great plants to have in the summer because they cannot get enough sun.

"Sufficient watering to keep the ground wet is the most important thing you can do for plants in the heat," Ross Brower of American Nursery on Saddle River Road in Fair Lawn, told the news source. "The biggest mistake is watering plants at the top. The leaves get wet but the roots are where it's needed."

According to the Muskogee Phoenix, it is also important when a person waters plants. The best time will be as late in the evening or as early in the morning as possible, so the heat of the sun doesn't dissipate the water too quickly.
