Recent studies have shown that fresh flowers have the ability to induce happiness and improve mood. With this, as well as the fact that blooms can add instant beauty and fragrance to any environment, in mind, volunteers in cities across the nation recently set out to plant many varieties of blooms.

In Lansing, Michigan, 70 volunteers helped to plant some 16,000 flowers at the state capitol.

According to the Lansing State Journal, the blooms planted included geraniums, vinca, marigolds, salvia and petunias. Colors included peach, orange, pink and yellow.

In the past 20 years, volunteers have helped to plant more than 274,000 flower plants at the capitol building.

"Everyone in downtown Lansing and all the legislative people absolutely love it," said event coordinator Trena Trowhill.

In Louisville, Kentucky, several groups pooled their resources and time to purchase and plant flowers in pots throughout the city.

This year marks the fifth year for the flower pot project. In total, there are 184 pots throughout the city's central business district.
