Fall flowers make perfect October birthday gifts

by webdev

October 05, 2011

The harvest season is now in full swing, which means that bright greens and pinks of summer have given way to more subdued hues of brown, burgundy and gold in the Northern U.S.'s natural environment. It is only fitting that the birth flower for October is the marigold, a bloom that comes in shades of orange, yellow, cream and maroon, according to the West Virginia University Extension Service.

Marigolds are best when sown indoors in March or April, but can also be planted outdoors in May after the chance of frost has passed. After 45 to 50 days, marigolds will flower, gracing gardens in the late summer, the news source reports. They usually grow to be between six inches and four feet.

Marigolds blend gloriously in a bouquet with chrysanthemums, because of their closely-related origins. They also look stunning with other fall blooms such as sunflowers and aster flowers. An October birthday is the perfect opportunity to give someone a bouquet of fall flowers. October babies are sure to love birthday gifts that include the beautiful colors of the season.
