Flowers get the last word this Sunday!

by Jacqueline

January 29, 2009

Everyone knows that one of the best reasons to watch the Super Bowl is to see the cool commercials. (I'm pretty sure I know who's playing.)

And this year Teleflora is part of the lineup with its funny ad featuring talking flowers. What do they chat about -- fertilizer, florists, the secrets of sharing a vase? Actually, it's all about the Teleflora difference. With Teleflora, every single order is hand-arranged and hand-delivered in a vase by a florist from our 20,000+ network.

No one else in he industry can make that claim. In fact, it's not uncommon for other floral providers to send a bunch of blooms casually dropped in a box. Our edgy and entertaining Talking Flowers commercial makes the case clear: What are you saying to someone when flowers show up in a box, often past their peak of freshness? Let's just say: not pretty.

But if you want to make the right impression, our exquisitely arranged and expertly delivered bouquets let you do just that. Whether you're conveying all-out passion, exploring a quirky flirtation or honoring a treasured friendship, why not use the freshest, fullest, most fabulous flowers in a keepsake vase that lasts forever?

Teleflora's Rubies and Roses Bouquet

For extra points, if you choose Valentine's flowers from our Rubies and Roses collection, you can enter our sweepstakes to win a $60,000 ruby necklace as well as other terrific prizes. Valentine's Day is less than 2 weeks away and there's no time like the present to place your order.

OK, now back to the game. Is there any bean dip left?

That Super Bowl commercial by Teleflora was one of the worst commercials I have ever seen.  Not only was it in poor taste but was incredibly degrading to women!  Unfortunately it was witnessed by my two daughters who I would never have wanted to listen to such shameful garbage.  What were you thinking?

Boycotting Teleflora

While I understand men are your target audience for not only superbowl commercials but also with Valentine's Day coming up, you should have considered some focus groups before airing that superbowl gem of an ad.   That commercial shows you've completely underestimated the buying power of women even when they are not the ones doing the buying.  My husband knows he will not be getting any this Feb. 14th if he uses Teleflora.  Think again before you decide to represent your company name with another tasteless, offensive, misogynistic commercial.

Your commercial was misogynistic and rude. It was not funny and did not inspire me to use your service.  As a matter of fact I will NEVER use your service now.  You people should be ashamed of yourselves.

No one that I know will ever use teleflora now.  Pull the ad and save some face.  What would your mothers say?

Your Super Bowl commercial was possibly the worst one I have seen.  You insulted women, romance novels and cats.  Way to go! I hope that you realize you have lost me as a customer.  I wonder how many more people feel that way?

I find your new Superbowl ad extremely offensive, nauseatingly stupid, and, which is perhaps worse, not even funny. What were you thinking? Were you trying to appeal to men (in which case, hello, not all men are Neanderthal bastards, thank you!), or, God forbid, to *women*? (In that case, words fail me.)

And -- I think it bears repeating -- IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY.

You *fail*. Go apologize to your mothers. Seriously. Go

Didn't need my young children to hear "NO one wants to see you naked."  You could have shown some class and humor.  Did not want to use your product after you exposed my kids to this horrible message you sent my girls.

Amazing...in one brief commercial Teleflora managed to insult people who read, single women and cat owners.

Just as an aside, why did Teleflora decide to pick romance as the genre of books to insult? Is it because of the mistaken idea that people who read romance are losers? Think again...romance novels account for over 50% of all fiction book sales--and among those are highly educated women who earn a lot of money.

Too bad, Teleflora, you really screwed up on this one.  This insult has spread through the romance community like a California wildfire. I think you just lost a whole lot of business. Not a good thing in these hard economic times.

As one of the tens of millions of romance readers in the US, I can assure you that I will take my business elsewhere.  I will NEVER order from your company, after your nasty Superbowl commercial.

I'd never heard of Teleflora before the furor over this commercial got started. However, this is not a case of any publicity is good publicity, as your company is now not forever associated as edgy, funny, and innovative in my mind, but rather as antiquated, offensive, and really rather dumb. Not a wise move, this ad. I'll be sticking with the flowers that don't perpetuate harmful stereotypes, or result in an unwanted ugly vase collection, thanks.

"And this year Teleflora is part of the lineup with its funny ad featuring talking flowers"

The ad was NOT funny. It was insulting on so many levels.

"Our edgy and entertaining Talking Flowers commercial makes the case clear: What are you saying to someone when flowers show up in a box, often past their peak of freshness? Let's just say: not pretty"

The ad itself was what was not pretty. What I , and many others, got from that ad is that the receiver represented not so beautiful women who have a cat , read romance , work in a cubby and  so  are stereotypically unworthy.

"But if you want to make the right impression,"

I think that because so many people are insulted by this ad that it is TeleFlora who did not make the right impression.

I think you should have listened to your own slogan.  As I'm sure you've heard ( and no, deleting all comments doesn't mean they don't exist) you've managed to offend a whole lot of people with that misogynistic add.  Maybe this should be the last time you advertise during the Superbowl game!

Second time commenting - first one never appeared! And now you are back to 0? Really?

Teleflora and their in-house ad agency responsible for these ads owe women an apology. Those are the most mean-spirited and cruel ads I've ever seen. I understand wanting to cut through the clutter as your too-little-too-late apology e-mail states, but why do you need to throw women under the bus to do so?

How does it feel to spend a few million dollars on a PR nightmare?

Such poor poor judgment.

"Edgy?" That ad was horrific. The so-called teleflora difference is sexist and offensive. You give your network of florists a bad name.

This ad is insulting and demeaning to women. I just want you to know that you've lost my business and I'll be encouraging my friends and family to use another florist. It's not funny. It's not edgey. It's just insulting. Shame on you for going out of your way to insult women.

I think you've just put yourself out of business.  I will not go to you for my flower needs.  The hotel I work with will not offer your placards anymore.  I will also take this to the regional manager to be sure we won't recommend you in our entire tri-state area. PS Regional manager is a woman.  Who owns a cat.  Who is single.

Fail, Teleflora, Fail.

lol I don't get what the big deal is. I really don't see much wrong with the commercial and by the way everyone is acting, you are a little bit uptight and fitting the stereotype. It's a commercial...  laugh a little!

The point is that when you send flowers to someone and they're all old and brown and yucky, you're saying what the flowers said... "you're boring, uptight, stuck up, but I had to send these flowers so I wouldn't have to hear you NAG me about it later"... funny because nagging is what you guys are doing now in these comments

I can assure you that the women watching the football game aren't the ones commenting this commercial. These are the women mad that their husband wants to tune in to the game with his guy friends drinking beer while they are upstairs reading their boring romance novels nagging to their mother about what a boring life they live

Love is very special ,like the LOVE that CHRIST poured on us on the CROSS.I will never order anything that has to do with your company.
Has our country stooped so low as to see LOVE the way it was portrayed in your ad.I believe a public confession is in order ,thru the air waves can't you see how your ad showed no compassion to those who are unlovely to our culture but GOD,LOVES them because HE sees their worth in HIS kingdom.

Geez, I didn't take the ad personally. I think everyone needs to lighten up a bit. Maybe teleflora should counter with a similar commercial towards men.
I guess I'm just not that sensitive.
